As a mother, Akua was inspired to write children’s books when she noticed the lack of literature based on characters and history of African culture. She not only wanted her children, but all children, to read and see books that uplifted indigenous people beyond the typical slavery stories and the watered down versions of blackness. She gives strength and pride to her characters and encourages her young readers to learn history and stories of their ancestors who overcame obstacles and challenges, To see beauty and glory of the many shades of brown skin.

In 2011, Akua published her first book, Madam C.J. Walker’s Road to Success, under her own publishing company Seeds Book Publishing. The book shares Madam Walker’s story of the journey through trials and tribulations, and becoming an entrepreneur in a time when the odds were thought to be against her. The Seeds Book Publishing mission is to plant seeds into children and have them identify with the characters they are reading about. The books include full illustrations that tell stories through words and pictures.

As of today, her company has published five books, all authored by Akua Agasi. The book Saniyah’s Face shows toddlers parts of their faces, which is great for infants and early childhood development. The latest work is Imhotep’s Learning Concepts Early Math Vol. 1A. Akua’s Learning Concepts workbook is filled with African culture while teaching children mathematics with Egyptian and other African pictures to add history to learning. It comes with a 30 flash card set with the same pictures promoting not only early learning, but early history and culture. My personal favorite is her “number 9” worksheet and flash card. The number 9 is represented by Oya. Nine is also the number of Oya and the amount of pennies one leaves as an offering to this Orisha.

The great thing about Akua is her ability to create structure and follow steps to complete any task she desires. Her Virgo Sun makes her a natural teacher and mothering energy toward all people, but more importantly, children.
